8 Outdoor Party Tips Every Rural Homeowner Should Know

June 25, 2025

A rural outdoor summer party with a picnic table.

There’s something special about summer get-togethers in the country, the open space, the fresh air, the feeling of home. But hosting in a rural setting comes with its own set of quirks that require a little more planning than your average backyard barbecue.

At Compeer Home, we understand because we live in the rural communities we serve. Here are our best party tips to help your next outdoor gathering go off without a hitch.

1. More Space = More Setup

One of the perks of rural living is having room to spread out, but more space means more to plan. How far from the house will food and drinks be served? Will there be yard games?

If you're serving hot dishes outside, try using outdoor-rated extension cords for slow cookers or insulated carriers to keep food warm. Set up games a safe distance from tables so guests can relax without stray footballs flying past.

And since rural homes can be tricky to find, place balloons or a party sign at the end of your driveway to help guests spot your home with ease.

2. Plan Ahead — You're Not 5 Minutes from a Store

Last-minute errands aren’t always realistic when you’re living in the country. Stock up early on essentials like ice, trash bags and propane.

Need more chairs or coolers? Borrow them from a neighbor. Not only is it practical, it’s also a great way to bring them into the fun.

3. Bugs and Wildlife — Keep Nature in Check

Uninvited guests like mosquitoes, flies and the occasional raccoon or barn cat are part of country life. Natural deterrents like citronella candles, essential oil sprays or herb planters with mint, lavender or basil can help.

To discourage curious critters from stopping by for leftovers, cover food with mesh lids and keep trash sealed.

4. Midwest Terrain and Accessibility

Rural properties with gravel driveways, bumpy grass and wide-open yards can pose challenges for older visitors or anyone with limited mobility. Set up seating on flat, stable surfaces when possible.

After dark, solar lanterns or string lights can make it easier for guests to move around safely.

5. Be Ready for Anything: Midwest Weather Edition

Midwest summers are known for their surprises, from pop-up rain showers to strong wind gusts. Keep your tablecloths and cutlery secure with clips or weights and have umbrellas or canopies ready to offer shade or shelter.

A little flexibility can go a long way in keeping the party going.

6. Make Cleanup Easy — You’re on Your Own

In rural areas, often times you’re hauling your own trash. Set up labeled bins for garbage, composting and recycling ahead of time, and store full bags in a garage or shed to keep animals out overnight.

7. Bonfire? Burn Smart and Safe

Bonfires are a classic rural tradition and a great way to end the night. Keep them safe and fun by using a fire ring or pit in a clear area, checking local burn restrictions and having a hose or water source nearby.

Skip the urge to toss trash in the fire, and always keep a close eye if kids are nearby.

8. Show Off Your Country Charm

Rural properties don’t need over-the-top décor when the countryside is your backdrop. Use what you have like fresh flowers from the garden and picnic blankets to create a cozy setting.

Whether it’s the view of the fields or a sunset behind the silo, let your land set the scene.

We know hosting an outdoor party on a rural property takes a little extra thought, but we hope these party tips help you feel more prepared to enjoy every moment.
